19th Annual Event Raises Money for HIV/AIDS in Rochester and Finger Lakes

AIDS Care would like to thank the community for its overwhelming support of its 19th annual AIDS Walk. This year’s event raised more than $50,000 to benefit people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region through the work of AIDS Care.

AIDS Rochester had organized the AIDS Walk for 18 years, and this was the first time the walk was held by AIDS Care, the new organization formed by the January 2010 merger of AIDS Rochester and AIDS Community Health Center.

Nearly 250 people participated in this year’s walk, which took place at Genesee Valley Park on Saturday, June 5, and was chaired by Monroe Community College President, Dr. Anne Kress. The event featured entertainment, breakfast and lunch for participants, as well as incentives based on the dollar amount raised. Prizes were also awarded to the top fundraisers in individual, team, and Paws for the Cause (a special category in which dog lovers could collect donations and walk the route with their dogs) categories.

“HIV/AIDS is still a major challenge in our community, which is a fact many people forget due to all the recent advances in care,” said Jay Rudman, President and CEO of AIDS Care. “As a result, AIDS Care is committed to holding events like the AIDS Walk to raise awareness about this disease and raise money to help those who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as those who are at risk.  We’d like to thank all the individuals and organizations who supported this event!”

Special thanks to participants, volunteers, the planning committee, and to major sponsors of the 2010 AIDS Walk which included Platinum Sponsor Thomson Reuters, as well as The Bonadio Group, Buckingham Properties, Frontier Communications, Harter Secrest and Emery LLP, Nixon Peabody LLP, Stephens Media Group, and Wegmans.
