HIV Testing Day

AIDS Care Brings Awareness to the Region in Recognition of National HIV Testing Day
National HIV Testing Day is recognized annually to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS and emphasize the importance of getting an HIV test. It was started in 1995 by the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) to send the message “Take the Test, Take Control,” to those at risk for HIV from those already living with HIV.
In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, AIDS Care offered free HIV testing at a series of events spanning downtown Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. Events were held:
• Saturday, June 19 at Samuel Torres Park in collaboration with Ibero-American Action League
• Wednesday, June 23 at AIDS Care’s Health Outreach Project Office at 416 Central Avenue
• Thursday, June 24 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Geneva, NY in collaboration with the Finger Lakes AIDS Task Force, RATFA, and the Family Planning Center
• Friday, June 25 at AIDS Care’s 259 Monroe Avenue Office in collaboration with The MOCHA Center
• Saturday, June 26 at the Lewis Street YMCA as part of the RATFA community collaborative
AIDS Care provided over 200 free, confidential HIV tests during these 5 events and are pleased to report that no new positive results were identified.
“Helping people understand the importance of HIV testing and making sure that HIV testing is accessible to everyone is at the core of our mission,” said Jay Rudman, AIDS Care President and CEO. “While we at AIDS Care provide free HIV testing on a daily basis, National HIV Testing Day provides a special opportunity to remind the community of the importance of being informed, getting an HIV test, and getting into care.”
