AIDS Care’s AIDS Red Ribbon Ride Raises Nearly $80,000
Fundraiser for HIV/AIDS Services in Rochester and Finger Lakes Exceeds Goal by 60 Percent

AIDS Care held its AIDS Red Ribbon Ride last week, raising almost $80,000 to benefit people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. Fifty-eight people participated in this year’s AIDS Red Ribbon Ride, a fully supported bicycle ride during which riders collected donations for their efforts to bike in either a one- or five-day event.

With the theme “we ride as one,” the AIDS Red Ribbon Ride is intended to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, as well as funding for the work of AIDS Care, the organization formed by the merger of AIDS Rochester and AIDS Community Health Center. Participants biked through the nine-county region served by AIDS Care with all of the funds raised benefiting people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region through AIDS Care’s medical, social, and prevention education services.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, New York State has the highest cumulative number of AIDS cases in the entire country since the beginning of the epidemic, and it is estimated that more than 20 percent of people infected with HIV do not know it.

“With the many recent advances in care, many people do not realize that HIV/AIDS is still a serious illness, however there is still much work to be done,” said Jay Rudman, President and CEO of AIDS Care. “We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to the entire community for their overwhelming support of this year’s AIDS Red Ribbon Ride. In this difficult economic climate, we are very thankful that so many in our community are supporting AIDS Care’s life-sustaining work.”

Special thanks to participants, volunteers, the planning committee, and to major sponsors of the 2010 AIDS Red Ribbon Ride which included The Bike Zone, MVP Healthcare, and Roche.
